Conservation

A starship returns to Earth centuries after leaving and finds empty spaceports, automated defenses, and modern infrastructure that contrasts with people who have abandoned mechanized transport and rely on foot and horse-mounted military forces. A small landing party travels inland, encounters roadblocks and armed but low-tech garrisons, and is escorted into a gleaming city whose citizens govern themselves with strict controls over energy and motion. The story follows the explorers as they probe why abundant technological means lie unused, exploring themes of deliberate conservation, social regulation of power, and the tension between technological capability and chosen restraint.
