Counterweight

A veteran reporter accepts an observer's commission aboard a colossal, space-built emigrant ship making a new colonization voyage after an earlier trip ended in revolt and the loss of a subsequent vessel. He watches the captain assemble a carefully chosen crew and notes how the ship functions as a traveling town, with confined quarters, social pressures, and rules intended to prevent previous disorders. The narrative follows his detached observations as tensions surface—illustrated by a seemingly minor theft—and considers how isolation, authority, and group dynamics strain life on a prolonged interstellar passage.
