About This Book

A survey of decorative art and architectural ornament tracing design from prehistoric etchings through Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron ages into ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Phoenician, Persian, Greek and Roman traditions, and onward to Indian, Chinese, Japanese, early Christian, Byzantine, Saracenic, Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. It outlines principal architectural orders, links ornament to religious and cultural contexts, and discusses industrial arts and craft developments. Numerous illustrations support descriptions of motifs, construction, and stylistic landmarks, intended as a condensed handbook for students and practitioners.
