About This Book

This collection gathers traditional Finnish runes and folk songs assembled from various regions, presenting mythic narratives, heroic episodes and magical charms alongside domestic and work songs, lullabies, courting and women's songs, and sea- and boat-songs. Longer mythic pieces recount legendary deeds, the origin of the kantele, and encounters with spirits, while shorter lyrics preserve everyday speech, ritual formulas, and refrains for dancing, weaving, and healing. Arranged in themed sections, the anthology preserves variants of oral texts and illustrates communal poetic forms, musical refrains, and ritual language that underpin the region's oral tradition.
