About This Book

A series of letters by an architect offers detailed, on-the-spot descriptions of monuments, churches, baths, villas, fountains, walls, obelisks, tombs, and archaeological remains encountered in France, Italy, and Greece, with a particular attention to Rome and its neighbourhood. The writer combines measured architectural critique—comments on proportion, materials, ornament, and restoration—with vivid travel observation of sites, gardens, and urban topography, and occasional practical reflections on conservation, taste, and the experience of moving through historical landscapes.
