The narrative follows Déroulède, whose public humiliation in a salon duel triggers a long personal saga set against revolutionary Paris. As loyalties shift and political violence increases, the plot moves through clandestine alliances, betrayals, arrests, prison confinement, legal examinations, and public uprisings. Personal relationships—marked by love, jealousy, and a vow of revenge—intersect with broader events such as popular agitation, courtroom proceedings, a death sentence, and tumultuous riots, producing a tense arc of accusation, sacrifice, and attempted vindication. The work is organized into a prologue and numbered episodes that alternate intimate scenes and public drama until a final resolution.
