About This Book
The story follows the appearance of a massive, aerostat-like alien organism that escapes a vast spherical craft and drifts across North America, attracting crowds and military attention as it searches the ground with plaintive cries. Authorities attempt to shepherd it toward the ocean while jets and bombers encircle cities, but panic, accidents, and a premature attack lead to collisions that fatally damage the creature and send it crashing into a major metropolis, causing widespread casualties and destruction. In the aftermath the parent ship descends and a formal apology is signaled, leaving humans to reckon with the consequences of misunderstanding and the fragile boundary between curiosity and catastrophe.
