About This Book

The book traces post-biblical Jewish history in a compact, chronological survey, moving from the Babylonian exile and the rebuilding of communal institutions through the destruction of the Second Temple, the formation of the Mishnah and the Talmudic era, and the communities' interactions with Islamic and Christian polities. It treats medieval European life, periods of oppression and expulsions, intellectual and literary developments across centuries, the effects of emancipation beginning in the late eighteenth century, and cultural changes in the nineteenth century. Each chapter balances political events, religious evolution, and literary activity to present a readable manual for students.
