About This Book
The story follows Mr. Samuel Gunnill after a late-night disturbance leads to his arrest by Police-constable Cooper, causing public shame and domestic tension with his daughter Selina. He pays a fine but faces neighbours' commentary and the emboldened officiousness of the constable, while two admirers, Herbert Sims and Ted Drill, oscillate between bravado and awkwardness as they promise retaliation to restore family honour. The narrative sketches small-town gossip, masculine posturing, and comic domestic misunderstandings through affectionate irony and episodic scenes of social embarrassment.
