The Night Horseman

A brilliant scholar-turned-physician, Randall Byrne, collapses and becomes drawn into a remote ranch household where a taciturn wanderer known as Whistling Dan has an almost restorative effect on an ailing patriarch and holds the affection of the daughter, Kate Cumberland. Byrne applies deduction and observation to unravel the wanderer's past and the household's dependencies while cowboys such as Buck Daniels wrestle with loyalty, love, and practical consequences. The plot moves through investigation, tense confrontations, episodic violence, and uncanny occurrences, culminating in moral tests and a decisive clash that exposes buried truths and reshapes the characters' fates.
