About This Book
An aging monarch divides his realm among his three daughters after demanding public declarations of love; two eldest flatter and receive power while the youngest, who refuses false praise, is disinherited. The ruler's authority quickly unravels as his favored daughters betray and marginalize him, driving him toward madness and exile. A parallel strand follows a betrayed noble whose illegitimate son plots against the legitimate heir, leading to blinding violence and further disorder. Outrage, loyalty, misjudgment, and suffering culminate in civil conflict, tentative reconciliation attempts, and tragic outcomes that probe authority, filial ingratitude, identity, sight and blindness, and the natural and moral order.
