About This Book
Set in a small English watering-place, the narrative follows a young couple whose attachment is opposed by a stern guardian, and a rival brother whose jealousy complicates their prospects. A mystery about the ward's birth prompts the suitor to undertake a secret journey to Madras to uncover the truth, while confidantes, an elderly nurse, and an unexpected legacy influence events at home. The story traces preparations, departures, illnesses, and delays, interweaving revelations and reconciliations as loyalties and misunderstandings are tested and gradually resolved, bringing clarity to family relationships and the lovers' future.
