About This Book
The narrative follows a poor boy named Diamond who discovers a hole in his bed that opens a window to the personified North Wind and her realm. She carries him on journeys to the strange land at the back of the wind, where he experiences marvels and trials, witnesses a shipwreck, and observes events that touch his family. Alongside these fantastical voyages the story traces domestic hardship, Diamond learning to work and help his household, and tender scenes of care and loss. The boy’s bond with the North Wind culminates in a final, transformative departure.
