About This Book
The story follows Casey Ryan, a headstrong prospector whose city recklessness contrasts with his solitary desert pursuits. While prospecting with his partner Barney, he returns to find the camp partly looted and Barney gone, evidence of hostile raiders preying on isolated parties. Investigating a hidden rock hut, an unresponsive old woman, and a strangely suggestive Joshua tree, he conceals himself, scouts the surrounding butte from high vantage, and methodically searches for the rifleman responsible. Resourceful and defiant, he prepares to confront the mystery and protect other prospectors rather than retreat to safety.
