Chapters examine chivalric verse, spiritual lyricism (including Hadewych), beast-epic and city poetry (Reinaert), early lyric and didactic writers such as Jacob van Maerlant, and the rise of public literary life and national sentiment. A prefatory discussion sets out the methodological stance and the need for a new synthesis grounded in recent scholarship and an alternative aesthetic viewpoint.
