About This Book
Two young siblings live in dire poverty after their mother’s death while their father is intermittently absent; the older sister, nicknamed Petite mère, assumes maternal duties for her five-year-old brother Charlot, keeping their room tidy and soothing his hunger and fears. A nighttime of waiting and the discovery of a hidden crust of bread open into daily rituals of washing, dressing, and school runs, interrupted by anxiety over the father’s return. The narrative traces their endurance and resourcefulness, the small mercies offered by neighbors such as the concierge Madame Perlet, and the quiet hope and solidarity that sustain them amid neglect.
