Captain Dieppe

A resourceful but impoverished captain, fresh from failed plans and avoiding recognition, wanders into rural scenes where he becomes entangled with a Countess, her proud husband, and the opportunistic Paul de Roustache. Secret letters, gambling debts, and threats of exposure drive tense negotiations and schemes, while a shadowy figure named Guillaume pursues his own ends. Episodes of clandestine meetings, a village inn, a riverside flood, and a perilous carriage crossing lead to a journey toward Rome, as loyalties, honor, and fortunes are tested and the captain's luck and cunning shape the unfolding consequences.
