Martians Never Die

A small group gathers annually in a circular chamber to await a scientist's brief window for returning from interplanetary travel, watching a battered metallic sphere that houses his machine. Friends, a hopeful woman, a pragmatic financier and skeptical reporters debate whether the voyage succeeded until the sphere opens and the scientist emerges altered and accompanied by a repulsive, tentacled creature whose presence unsettles the onlookers. The story explores the tension between scientific daring and personal stakes, the uncanny consequences of contact with alien life, and the uneasy mix of wonder, opportunism and dread that follows a startling, ambiguous return.
