The Passenger

The story follows a woman on a slow transport to Sol who fondly recalls ordinary earthly pleasures and five difficult years teaching on a barren rim outpost. In her stateroom a sudden, soundless burst of laughter precedes a telepathic intrusion: a courteous male mind identifies himself as a wealthy telepath from a distant colony, apologizes for the breach, and initiates a playful, intimate exchange. The narrative contrasts homeward longing and mundane memory with the uncanny intimacy and ethical awkwardness of mental contact aboard a crowded ship.
