Combat

An extraterrestrial spacecraft lands on Red Square and Soviet authorities impose strict censorship and control of information. Henry Kuran, a fluent Russian-speaking American specialist, is abruptly summoned by the influential official Sheridan Hennessey and pressed into service despite his reluctance. He is rushed through secrecy and assignments to act as a linguistic and diplomatic conduit amid tightly managed encounters. The narrative examines how Cold War suspicion, bureaucratic power plays, and competing perspectives can distort first contact, suggesting that human misunderstanding and political maneuvering may prove as consequential as the alien presence itself.
