A Little Dusky Hero

The narrative follows George Washington McKinley Jones, a small, impoverished Black boy who serves as a devoted attendant to an injured officer during wartime. Through episodes in camp, a perilous battlefield, and a tent hospital, the boy displays loyalty, resourcefulness, and courage as he carries water, tends wounds, and rescues the wounded officer to safety. Interspersed chapters trace his backstory, moments of fear and determination, and the responses of fellow soldiers and surgeons, creating a portrait of childlike devotion, sacrifice, and the bonds formed amid conflict.
