About This Book
The three tableaux unfold in silent, staged episodes set in early nineteenth-century Vienna, where a melancholy performer obsessively tends an image of his beloved Pierrette while friends attempt cheer and diversion through music, dance, and mockery. A wedding celebration elsewhere contrasts gaiety with the performer’s inner turmoil; a white veil becomes a focal object that links lovers and exposes tensions. The final scene reveals the performer collapsed and the stunned arrival of the bride and her companion, leaving questions of longing, theatricality, and the boundary between appearance and reality unresolved.
