A young man and his partner confront the state’s periodic selection of volunteers for an indefinite, secretive mission known as the Nowhere Journey; the narrative follows his anguished decision to marry before potential conscription, the public rituals and riots that normalize such sacrifice, and the mounting dread that those sent never return. Tension moves from private intimacy to political theater and clandestine commerce as he encounters propaganda, profiteering intermediaries, and surreal episodes that blur dream and waking life. The work examines the emotional cost of enforced patriotism, the use of civic ritual to control populations, and the instability of perceived reality.
