The Last Gentleman

A small rural community experiences a chain of atomic detonations and then drifts into a mysterious, pervasive lethargy that residents attribute to fallout. Sparse, censored broadcasts report several bombs and the annihilation of isolated towns, yet officials and neighbors offer little concrete guidance. Daily routines continue in a numb daze: work, household tasks, grief, and puzzlement over crop failures and shortages proceed with diminishing energy and concern. The story follows a married couple and their neighbors as apathy, exhaustion, and disrupted communication reshape how people perceive and respond to catastrophe.
