Two Royal Foes

The narrative follows a young girl in the Thuringian countryside whose family life is upended by the Napoleonic wars. It alternates intimate domestic scenes at village and farmhouse with the aftermath of battle around Jena, encounters with wounded soldiers, and the flight of civilians. Village conversations and actions reveal uncertainty about Prussian leadership and alliances while personal threads — family loyalties, a daughter's peril, an escape, and a marriage — unfold alongside dealings with royal figures. The work moves from sudden wartime chaos toward the gradual reordering of lives across Thuringia, blending private experience with political and military turmoil.
