A sequence of linked comic episodes follows a newly appointed resident magistrate as he settles into an awkward, draughty house and navigates local life in a rural county. The narratives detail domestic inconveniences, clashes with contractors and neighbours, awkward social calls, equine misadventures, hunts, and petty legal and personal disputes. Each vignette combines wry observation of manners and procedures with gentle satire of provincial customs, presenting a portrait of community characters through episodic incidents that mix farce, hospitality, and the small frustrations of public duty.
