The Late Tenant

The novel follows David Harcourt, who takes a London flat previously occupied by a woman whose untimely death leaves unanswered questions. His tenancy draws him into the affairs of the deceased's sister Violet, a missing set of papers, gossip of ghostly visitations, and the shadow of a mysterious man called Van Hupfeldt. David's enquiries lead him through eccentric neighbors, a fleeing prior tenant, a discovered diary, nocturnal confrontations and physical struggle, as loyalties shift and secrets emerge; the plot culminates in a tense gathering and an uneasy reconciliation when Van Hupfeldt seeks to make amends.
