About This Book
The narrative presents episodic scenes from a nineteenth-century goldfield community, following the labours, accidents, and short-lived fortunes of diggers and their families. It traces the physical hazards of sinking shafts, the rhythm of drinking and gambling, desertions and deaths, and the private sorrows of men who long for home while facing harsh climate and isolation. Through portraits of hardship and small solidarities, it examines exile, the precariousness of hope, and how landscape and work shape character, using multiple viewpoints across four substantial parts.
