Jenifer's Prayer

The narrative follows a young English woman traveling south under the charge of a Scottish kinsman whose impulsive proposal and subsequent remorse create awkwardness and emotional strain. As they arrive near an ancestral estate and the respectable market town that serves it, family backgrounds and old alliances emerge: a widowed mother with social pretensions, a sister, and an older relative who adopted the kinsman. The plot moves between the present journey and revelations of past imprudence, examining trust, conscience, and the pressures of inheritance and reputation on intimate relationships.
