About This Book
This study gathers demographic and social data about island life, concentrating on rural conditions and providing material for classroom analysis. It surveys population distribution, racial and geographic composition, and the agricultural basis of the economy, and profiles the jíbaro as a rural social type. It examines housing, family organization, and labor practices including the roles of women and children, and links land tenure, unemployment, and poverty to health issues such as anemia and malaria. It also addresses crime, intemperance, juvenile delinquency, and the state of rural schools, discussing teacher–community relations and contemporary rural school movements in a descriptive, diagnostic manner.
