Bobby in Search of a Birthday

A small boy in a children's home who has never experienced a birthday sets out to discover what a birthday is. He wanders, asks, and encounters a series of kindly adults and children who respond with patience and imaginative explanations; he is sheltered by a couple and befriended by a man who carries quarters and a woman who longs for her own child, ultimately receiving a borrowed birthday that teaches generosity, belonging, and the pleasures of play.
