About This Book
The account follows a long sea voyage across the Atlantic, around the Cape, through the Indian Ocean and across the Pacific, combining vivid shipboard episodes of storms, sickness, and daily quarrels with detailed arrival scenes and quarantine at New Zealand. Land journeys explore geothermal districts, Maori villages, goldfields and urban sights, while later island stops present Fijian village life, reef fishing, mountain ascents and hardships. Hawaiian visits include volcanic craters, local ceremonies and social life in Honolulu. Interwoven are natural-history observations of birds and fish, ethnographic sketches of indigenous customs, and reflections on colonial transport, missionary presence, commerce and the practical strains of long-distance travel.
