Little Prudy's Cousin Grace

The story follows the lively friendship of two nearly twelve-year-old girls, Grace Clifford and Katharine Hallock, whose contrasting temperaments drive a sequence of domestic episodes and social adventures. Episodes include exchanged rings as pledges, neighborhood entertainments, a gypsy's fortune-telling that stirs hopes and jealousies among a circle of children, contests for prizes, a wedding, and a children's fair. Through shifting fortunes, misunderstandings, and reconciliations the girls confront rivalries, learn about loyalty and humility, and navigate family and community events, with recurring motifs of play, social standing, and the charms and consequences of youthful impulsiveness.
