Scouting Dave: The Trail Hunter

A seasoned frontier scout, David Barring travels through unsettled western forests to warn nearby settlers after learning of an intended repossession by tribes led by Black Hawk. Accomplished in tracking and survival, he accepts a solitary life, dresses in frontier gear, and quietly admires Emily Hinton while doubting that his lifestyle can sustain a domestic partnership. After a weary night he sleeps in the woods, is startled by a passing warrior, struggles into close combat and kills the attacker, then perceives that a larger war party is moving nearby. The narrative follows his scouting missions and close encounters, exploring themes of duty, endurance, and the fraught interactions between settlers and Indigenous groups on the frontier.
