About This Book
A young man arrives to teach in an isolated mountain community, and the narrative sketches the primeval forest, local characters, and everyday rural life as the new teacher becomes entwined with neighbors. The death of an aged local named Nicholas provokes unease when he struggles to convey a final message about the new teacher, prompting gossip, suspicion, and moral questions. Through close scenes of medical visits, mill-side talk, and circulating rumor, the story examines the clash between outsider and tradition and shows how fear, misunderstanding, and human frailty shape reputations and consequences.
