About This Book
Set in a poor mountain household near the Norwegian border during the winter before Christmas, the four-act drama follows an aging cottage owner who longs for a promised state pension after a lifetime of hard labor, his skeptical wife, and their industrious daughter. Domestic scenes of want and small hopes alternate with visits from local officials, clergy and border guards whose words and actions stir expectation, doubt and gossip. The play examines aging, poverty, pride and dependence on distant authority, contrasting intimate family struggles with the bureaucratic promises and social dynamics of a remote rural community.
