The novel depicts a rural community swept by wartime violence: a man discovers a dead child amid burned homesteads, neighbors dig out other victims and face stunned grief and mounting anger. Through episodic chapters it follows survivors as they search for the missing, cope with destroyed houses and ruined churches, receive relief and reinforcements, and gradually confront the consequences of conflict until a fragile peace allows the slow work of rebuilding.
