A sequence of five ornate fairy tales that combine fable and lyrical description to pose moral puzzles about beauty, art, and suffering. Each story sketches a compact parable: a newly elevated ruler confronted by conscience and ornament; a proud courtly celebration whose cruelty yields a bitter lesson; a seafarer whose separation from his inner self becomes a quest of love and loss; a miraculous child's encounter with pity and judgment; and an allegory of temptation and retribution. Recurring themes include the costs of vanity and aestheticism, the demands of compassion and sacrifice, and the collision between innocence and social cruelty.
