About This Book
A bereaved prince is visited by his father's ghost, who alleges foul play and urges revenge; the prince responds by adopting ambiguous madness to test the court's conscience and to unmask the new ruler. He stages a play to provoke confession, confides in friends, and struggles with moral uncertainty and philosophical reflection on death. Romantic entanglements, spying, and miscommunications escalate into accidental and deliberate killings, madness, and political plotting. The escalating violence culminates in a fatal duel that leaves the royal household and several characters dead, and a new transfer of power at the close.
