The Red Chancellor

The narrative follows an English traveler who, seeking diversion, becomes entangled in courtly and political intrigue at an eastern European capital. Through social gatherings, clandestine conversations and sudden crimes he uncovers the feared chancellor’s ruthless influence and observes schemes involving a dashing officer and a highborn woman. A succession of strange incidents — duels, a capsized boat, assaults, mysterious burials and a maimed scholar — deepens the mystery and propels inquiries into hidden motives and long-buried secrets. Suspense mounts toward violent confrontations and revelations that expose the personal costs of power, vengeance and the restoration of tenuous order.
