The story opens in a tense decade after a catastrophic event and maps a world reorganized into a handful of rival alliances and interlinked missile networks. It alternates broad, almost litany-like images of planets, seas, and nations with focused scenes of three isolated missile operators who must choose between two buttons—one presented as a safeguard but revealed to be a sham. The prose examines deterrence, the burden of delegated violence, and the fragility of the individual conscience under institutionalized threat, ending with a trembling finger and an ambiguous, consequential motion.
