The Space Flame

A deep-space crew returning from a long survey descends into fear and violence after monotony and isolation inflame tensions and a mysterious, living, multicolored flame appears aboard their ship. Officers attempt to hold the crew together while supplies and parts vanish, hydrogen accumulates, and the entity corrodes bulkheads. The second officer discovers the flame in a hidden passage and finds it seemingly sentient and impervious to weapons as mutiny erupts. The narrative examines the strain of prolonged space travel, the breakdown of order, and the encounter with an inexplicable phenomenon that threatens the vessel and its people.
