A young engineer becomes entangled with a cunning and unscrupulous associate and is pulled into a string of seafaring and wartime adventures. The plot moves from shabby port hotels and secretive meetings to inventions, torpedo‑boat action, aerial danger and a wrecked seaplane, while encounters with a missionary, theatrical scandals and bank intrigue deepen the mystery. Naval offices, a sea captain's account and daring rescues alternate with betrayals, a kidnapping plot and violent confrontations that expose loyalties and hypocrisies, culminating in a stark, bloody resolution that reveals several characters' true natures.
