About This Book
An unnamed pawnbroker narrates the immediate aftermath of his young wife's suicide, walking his room and speaking to himself while trying to piece together what happened. He recalls her scant possessions, repeated pawned trinkets and modest manner, alongside his own brusque habits, stinginess and occasional contempt that he at first defends or minimizes. The voice moves from confused, fragmented justifications to clearer psychological self-examination as memories accumulate, culminating in a reluctant recognition of how his behavior and misunderstandings helped produce her despair. The tale probes guilt, self-deception and the painful admission of responsibility.
