A party of relatives and companions pursues a hidden hoard after a mysterious cable and old papers point to secrets beneath a priory and a carved red stone. The quest combines antiquarian curiosity and ciphered clues with physical danger as secret chambers, burglarly devices and rival claimants surface. Encounters range from country-house intrigue and gunroom brawls to shipboard voyages and pursuits across the city and Balkan countryside, aided by local friends and betrayed by unscrupulous foes. Puzzle-solving alternates with fights and narrow escapes, leading to an underground confrontation that settles long-buried claims and recovers the sought treasure.
