The narrative follows Allyn, a silver-headed Numan outlawed after striking a Logician, who crosses a hostile desert beyond a protective barrier and rescues Keeven, a wild Olman, from ravenous rat-creatures. Allyn explains that he fled to spare his twin sister from an enforced union and from state-imposed mind control, while aerial patrols and scientific hunters close in. Keeven offers refuge and a plan, but their return reveals a burned, deserted village that points to a broader disaster. Action-driven episodes of survival and flight are threaded with themes of cultural estrangement, technological coercion, and the human costs of rigid social control.
