The Crowded Colony

A band of off-world colonizers arrives at a decayed Martian settlement where dried canals and ruined temples mark a once-flourishing culture. They impose their authority while archaeologists excavate shrines and linguists decode inscriptions, revealing dialects and artifacts that challenge the colonizers' simplistic view of native degeneration. Tensions arise among the visitors as some endorse cultural reform and domination while others feel unease at dissecting a living society and mocking local customs. Encounters with individual Martians and scenes of everyday life expose moral questions about cultural imperialism, language, and the ethics of conquest.
