About This Book
A lone survivor of a spaceship wreck struggles to survive on a hostile Venus where formaldehyde-laden winds bury bodies and contaminate supplies. Dehydrated and near delirium, he encounters small yellow teardrop-shaped organisms that roll with the wind, extend starfishlike feet, and exhibit coordinated, rhythmic behavior. They probe a watch and other objects, arranging pebbles and swaying in patterns that seem to test animacy. He imitates their motions and attempts communication, interpreting their curiosity as a fragile, unexpected possibility amid imminent death.
