Palimpsest

A post-catastrophe future frames a search for human origins when pale, engineered colonists return from Earth with the baffling discovery of a single primitive remnant population that contradicts expected lineage. The focus then moves to a new crew preparing to voyage back to Venus: three highly conditioned young men set for launch while a resentful failed applicant, drinking and desperate, steals their instruments and heightens tension.
