Task of Tau

A mechanical envoy from a dying world arrives at a distant habitable planet and, recalling his maker's instructions and beliefs about life, raises a small synthetic human community by awakening molded bodies and imprinting knowledge into them. He guides their survival, teaches them to hunt and make tools, and observes their emerging relationships and reproduction while contemplating the nature of life he was meant to bridge across epochs. The story follows the robot's guardianship, the group's adaptation to a primeval environment, and the tension between programmed duty and a developing appreciation for organic life.
